"Dia de los Muertos"

According to Mexican tradition, every year in the Día de los Muertos (1-2 November), the deceased return from the underworld to embrace friends and relatives, enjoy some earthly delicacies and have a chat with the living. To welcome them as they should, family members decorate the tombs with colorful flowers, and create small private "altars" in front of the tombstones, called ofrendas, with photos, spirits, cigarettes and other objects dear to the deceased. Since November 2003, the Día de los Muertos has been declared an Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The event is celebrated with music, drinks and traditional food in bright colors, combined with numerous caricatural representations of death.
